Detective Rick Savage - Assassination of Grigori Rasputin

This is my first time using a game engine, making a game, making pixel art (or any art), writing dialogue, etc. This game was made for Historically Accurate Game Jam 8 as a solo project with the theme "Famous Assassinations".

This game is very barebones, short, and simple. I originally planned to add a lot more systems, but I quickly realized that I completely over scoped. In its current state, the game is closest to a simple point and click with a large reliance on the dialogue system.

In this game, you play as detective Rick Savage, a time traveling detective with a spotty memory of history. You have been sent back in time to solve famous assassinations throughout history. Luckily enough, you remember a lot from your history lessons! You may remember who the killer was, but how did they kill the deceased? And why?

Historical Accuracy

The exact nature of Rasputin's death is somewhat contested, especially regarding his consumption of cyanide. Early reports claim that he consumed cyanide laced food / drink in the Moika Palace basement, but was seemingly immune to the poison. After this, one of the 3 killers (Yusupov) shot Rasputin. The killers then took Rasputin's clothes and attempted to cover up the murder, but upon returning they were attacked by Rasputin, who had survived the gunshot. Rasputin fled the palace, where he was then shot again, driven to a bridge, and dropped into the Little Nevka river.

Modern accounts discredit this though, as the autopsy account recorded that there was no sign of poisoning, no water in the lungs, and that a single shot was fired into his head at close range (likely within the basement of the palace).

I decided to go with the first account, as it lends itself much better to the game given the multiple attempts on his life.

Scrapped Ideas / Assets:

Originally, I planned to include quite a lot more, such as a puzzle regarding the wine shelf, witnesses you could question, and more red hearings regarding the murder weapon and motive. I originally also had music in the game, but decided to remove it due to having issues with an implementation of a main menu & volume slider.

I planned to include character sprites during dialogue, and reactions to certain dialogue choices. I made some of those assets, but was unable to finish many of the planned animations in time and had some issues with showing the proper sprite during conversations.

I also planned to redo the walking animation for the detective since the current one is very, very strange.
