Thank you for looking at my submission!

This game was made for the Godot Wild Jam 81 as a solo project with the theme of "Expedition"

This is my 8th game jam, and this one went pretty well. I had a lot more time to put into this jam vs previous ones, and I was happy with the direction I got to take the theme, even if there is much more I would have liked to add.

HOW TO PLAY

  • Follow Mouse Movement
  • W to raise sails (changes speed, acceleration, and handling)
  • S to lower sails (changes speed, acceleration, and handling)
  • Hold Left / Right Click (Aims Guns, fires when released past a certain distance)
  • E to interact with islands
  • M to open Map / Menu

You'll start at Nassau, where you can buy ship upgrades and repair. Visit other islands (M to open Map), buy their goods, and trade with others. Some trade goods are more valuable than others, and some factions and distant islands will pay more for goods.

DESCRIPTION / THEME - "Expedition" (And wildcard)

I've been wanting to try and do a top down sailing controller for awhile, so took a shot at it with this jam. For the theme, I wanted Expedition to be based setting up a company in a dangerous era / area, and journeying. To push towards that, I tried to develop multiple factions and a core loop that rewarded players for traveling - like giving bonuses when selling between factions or selling to distant islands.

CUTTING ROOM FLOOR

  • Crew
    • I originally wanted crew on the ships. They would be about 1 pixel in size and would move around the ship depending on its state. For instance, manning cannons, rowing benches, sails, etc. Ended up dropping this when time was short.
  • Inter-faction war
    • The AI ships each have an associated faction, and islands they protect, but I also wanted to include combat between them. They would spawn with faction relations and that would cause them to attack one another when encountering another faction
  • Faction Relations
    • Currently, the ports and pirates have factions. When the player trades or attacks, they influence their relationship value with the faction. Originally, this was meant to influence sale prices, or even provide you with bodyguard ships if at high relation, or close some islands to you if very bad.

I Saw a game like this on Youtube. very cool. would be cool if you could make different factions fight each other.
